Long, and long overdue update

So I haven't updated in quite some time, but we've been having a great summer!

We kicked it off with a week in Tahoe around the Renn Faire.  The faire both weekends was great! We danced, and spent time with lots of people we love, and generally had a good time.  The week between was a fabulously relaxing time.  We got to share the week with Jenny, who we hadn't seen in way too long, and the last half with Dave.  There are all sorts of beautiful and wonderful things to do and see in and near Tahoe, and several friends we could have visited with, but we opted for the lazing around the camp site and really good camp food.

It was a great low key vacation!

End of June, and July involved a lot of time in Occidental. The last weekend in June Groblek's parents took Kosh for his first weekend AWAY FROM PARENTS, and we stayed at the Inn at Occidental.  Kosh and the grand parents had a great time to the point where all are still open to doing this more in the future.

Groblek and I indulged in a romantic weekend celebrating 10 years together (8 married).

The Inn was fabulous! The accommodations were some of the best we've ever experienced.  The staff was attentive, and even anticipated many needs.  The food was fantastic! It's a bed and breakfast, so breakfast was included, and they had wine and cheese in the evenings.  Neither of us are particular wine drinkers, but the cheese and snacky bits were quite good, and the wine was pleasant.  It was a nice way to get to know some of the other folks staying there. The breakfast was definitely a highlight! Grobleck generally only likes his eggs scrambled, and both mornings they had egg dishes that catered more to my taste there was an egg bake the first day and eggs Benedict the second.  There was also trail mix, granola, fruit, yogurt, and pastries.    The staff was perfectly happy to make adjustments, as we watched other guests do so, but Groblek decided to try it as designated, and enjoyed both dishes.

It was also fun playing tourist in Occidental.  Groblek's parents moved there a few years ago, so we've been several times, but never really checked out the town. We found the local library, which we later pointed out to the in-laws who were happy to find out about it.  We enjoyed a nature walk, an art gallery, more great food.

We also enjoyed playing some games.

The big discovery, helped by the Inn, of just how close Occidental is to the beach! I have strong memories of going to the beach at Grandma's growing up, but hadn't been to the beach in years.  I'm also thrilled that Kosh will get to associate the grandparents with the beach like I did.

July 4 th weekend involved taking Groblek and Kosh back up to Occidental for a week up there.  We had a fun fourth although we skipped the fireworks to get sleep.  I came home Sunday for a week of work, and back to Occidental to pick the guys up second weekend in July.

Had a pleasantly calm weekend at home, and then we decided to day trip to Santa Cruz for the Thomas days.

The Thomas Day event was really well done there were all sorts of fun activities for the kids and the ride on Thomas was fun.  The drive was insane.  In the future we would consider staying nearer the day before or after.

On the other hand Kosh was pretty good for the ride, which was 4 hours one way; we had expected more like 2-3, which we hoped meant he would be good for the road trip up to Oregon for the family reunion.

In general he was not bad, but we under planned for it.  We drove up to Ashland on day one, and then to McMinnville on day 2, so it was only about 4-5 hours per day, and Kosh was pretty good the first day, but when he realized we werent done he was greatly disappointed.  There was a good deal more fussing on day 2.

In general the accommodations in Ashland were quite nice the pool helped get our wiggles out after the drive. We discovered Mystic Pizza, which has odd, but well done pizzas great desserts, and a mini foosball table that Kosh loved.

Once we got to McMinnville we had a great time.  It was good seeing mom, and Aunt Bonnie at the hotel, and even better to see the extended family.  There was an informal dinner at Uncle Farmers farm, and then the formal reunion was Sunday.  Its been a decade since Ive made the reunion, and it was great to get to see many of the folks I only see there.  Kosh was happy that there was a park.  Uncle Farmer (who is in his 80s, and recently engaged) went down the slide with Kosh several times.

On the ride home we tried to include more stops.  The first day didnt work well.  We got a later start than we wanted to, and the stop wed really pushed was near the end of the days trip.  Once w gave up on that stop, and found a local park everybody was happier.  On the last day we hit a better mix two early stops meant that Kosh conked out for a nap that got us back to Woodland.

Yesterday Groblek and I took a recovery day, and saw thingy of the Galaxy.  Very fun! Farmers market ended up our vacation.  Now back into the routine.

Wanted to say that the playground at the Farmer's market is amazing.  They've redone central park and it's fantastic.  It's actually attracted Kosh away from the bounce houses and pony rides.

If Kosh is into Thomas, and you need an excuse to get down to Southern California in early november, note that Thomas is usually down at OERM (Orange Empire Railway Museum, www.oerm.org) in Perris the weekend before and the weekend after Veterans Day, plus Veterans Day. We normally volunteer for Veterans Day -- I'm usually a car attendant somewhere on the Thomas train, and my wife is usually working the Thomas merchandise tent. If you come down one year, let us know.

Heh, good to know. Honestly, I suspect that promising him a trip to a different train museum would do for convincing Josh - he's the reason we've had a membership to the California State Railroad Museum for the last couple of years. He still likes Thomas, but is becoming a bigger fan of the "real trains" (as he said this morning)

If he's less into Thomas, you can coordinate (and save money) on a weekend when Thomas isn't there, but there is a special event (like a spring railfest, etc.) Look at the webpage for info. If you let us know, we can make sure we're theatre-free that weekend and meet you.

I met you two right near when you got together, when you were in your "get a room" phase. It has been really wonderful watching your life unfold through your journal. You and your family seem like such wonderful people. I am so happy to know that people like you exist in the world. I'm glad for every journal post.

Thanks! It's been good knowing you even if it's mostly online these days.

FYI I'm one of the Crown & Anchorite you danced with at Faire. My dress is wee beige/brown/blue plaid.
